Do you ever struggle being around other people or feel chilly when it isn’t that cold? Both of these could be symptoms that your Water Element is out of balance. Fortunately, there is a simple (and fun!) way that you can naturally regain harmony when Water imbalances occur.
There are many different ways that Water Element imbalances can show up. In this blog, we address seven common signs that indicate your Water Element might be out of balance. We also discuss how Qi Gong can be a powerful tool for regaining balance and overcoming these common symptoms.
The Water Element is connected to your Kidneys and Jing energy. Jing is your physical and sexual energy and resides in your lower abdomen (Lower Tan Tien). Among other qualities, it plays an important role in helping you feel physically vital and energized.
If your Water Element is out of balance, your Jing can become depleted. In turn, you may experience tiredness and fatigue, even if you’ve been getting enough sleep. If you need to take lots of naps or drink excessive amounts of caffeine, it could be a sign that your Water Element is out of balance.
The Water Element is also connected to your joints and ligaments. When Water is balanced within you, you can move easily and comfortably, but you’ll likely experience joint pain if it becomes unbalanced. Because joint pain makes it difficult to move, it can be highly debilitating. In extreme cases, you might even have trouble walking or performing other simple physical tasks.
If you find yourself wearing jackets when it’s warm outside or tend to turn the heat up even with others feel hot, these could be signs that your Water Element is imbalanced. Similarly, if you have a tendency to turn up the heater even when others feel hot, that could also be a sign.
People with a Water imbalance may find it difficult to get warm. If you think this might apply to you, try to pay attention to your own temperature relative to your friends or family members. If you (or someone you know) are constantly feeling chilly when others are warm, know that it could indicate a Water Element imbalance.
Just as Water imbalances affect your body, they can also impact your mind and emotions.
People with a Water Element imbalance tend to feel fearful or insecure. For example, if someone has recurrent feelings of “not being enough,” it could relate to the Water Element. Once Water is rebalanced, these thoughts and emotions will transform into feelings of inspiration and abundance.
Not surprisingly, fear and insecurity often lead to feelings of chronic sadness and depression, which can be an indication of a Water Element imbalance.
This point really goes hand-in-hand with #4 above. People with chronic sadness often have self-defeating thought patterns. Of course, such thoughts can be quite destructive, so it’s important to identify such thoughts and work with them. This transformation can happen naturally when Water becomes balanced once again.
The Water Element controls your hormones. For this reason, hormonal imbalances are often a direct result of Water becoming imbalanced.
There are numerous symptoms associated with various hormone imbalances. Some of these are physical, while others are mental and emotional. Anxiety, constipation, high cholesterol, and tingling or numbness in your fingers are just a few of the ways hormonal imbalances can manifest. If you believe your hormones are out of balance, it may be wise to consult your doctor.
People with a Water imbalance often tend to avoid being around other people, especially when large groups are present. In many cases, they can even experience intense social anxiety or emotional unrest in social situations.
In evaluating your own social habits, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s normal and healthy for introverted people to thrive by being alone. Desiring alone time is not an indication that your Water Element is out of balance. Because we are all unique, it’s important to evaluate your own social habits with respect to how you normally feel. For example, if you’ve always preferred being alone or in small groups, that might be healthy for you. However, if you normally like big groups and suddenly lose interest in seeing others this could indicate a Water imbalance.
